About Fidelity

Fidelity Investments Canada ULC (“Fidelity”) was established in Canada in 1987. Fidelity is part of a group of companies collectively known as Fidelity Investments. Fidelity offers Canadian investors a full range of domestic, international and global equity and income-oriented mutual funds, ETFs, asset allocation strategies, managed portfolios, sustainable investing products, alternative mutual funds and a high net worth program. Fidelity products are available through a number of advice-based channels, including financial planners, investment dealers, banks and insurance companies.

Investment funds

Fidelity Funds and ETFs, Fidelity Capital Structure Corp. mutual funds and Fidelity Private Investment Pools are managed by Fidelity, and are available through independent dealers.

The statements contained herein are based on information believed to be reliable and are provided for information purposes only. Where such information is based in whole or in part on information provided by third parties, we cannot guarantee that it is accurate, complete or current at all times. It does not provide investment, tax or legal advice, and is not an offer or solicitation to buy. Graphs and charts are used for illustrative purposes only and do not reflect future values or returns on investment of any fund or portfolio. Particular investment strategies should be evaluated according to an investor’s investment objectives and tolerance for risk. Fidelity is not liable for any errors or omissions in the information or for any loss or damage suffered.

Commissions, trailing commissions, management fees, brokerage fees and expenses may be associated with investments in mutual funds and ETFs. Please read the mutual fund or ETF’s prospectus, which contains detailed investment information, before investing. The indicated rates of return are historical annual compounded total returns for the period indicated including changes in unit value and reinvestment of distributions. The indicated rate of return for each money market fund is an annualized historical yield based on the seven-day period ended as indicated and annualized in the case of effective yield by compounding the seven-day return and does not represent an actual one-year return. The indicated rates of return do not take into account sales, redemption, distribution or option charges or income taxes payable by any unitholder that would have reduced returns. Mutual funds and ETFs are not guaranteed. Their values change frequently, and investors may experience a gain or a loss. Past performance may not be repeated.

Mutual funds, unlike GICs, are not insured by the Canada Deposit Insurance Corporation or any other deposit insurer nor guaranteed by any entity.

Regulatory restrictions prohibit the presentation of performance data for funds with a history of less than one year.

Compound growth calculations are used only for the purpose of illustrating the effects of compound growth and are not intended to reflect future values of any mutual fund or returns on investment in any mutual fund or portfolio.

Index returns are shown for comparative purposes only. Indexes are unmanaged, and their returns do not include any sales charges or fees, as such costs would lower performance. It is not possible to invest directly in an index.

A return of capital reduces an investor’s adjusted cost base. Capital gains taxes are deferred until units are sold or until their ACB goes below zero. Investors should not confuse this cash-flow distribution with a fund’s rate of return or yield. While investors in Fidelity’s tax-efficient series (Tax-Smart CashFlow) will be able to defer some personal capital gains, they must still pay tax on capital gains distributions that arise from the sale of individual holdings by fund managers, and on interest and dividend distributions. Tax-Smart CashFlow will also pay a year-end distribution that must be reinvested in additional securities of the applicable fund. The monthly cash-flow distributions on Tax-Smart CashFlow are not guaranteed, will be adjusted from time to time and may include income.

Unlike traditional mutual fund series, exchange-traded series (ETF series) of mutual funds are traded on stock exchanges. In the event of a disruption or a halt in trading of the ETF series on a stock exchange or marketplace on which the ETF series of a fund are traded, the trading price of the ETF series may be affected. As a result, the disruption or halting of such trading may cause a performance variance between the ETF series and the traditional mutual fund series because the ETF series may trade in the market at a premium or discount to the net asset value (NAV) per unit. There can be no assurance that the ETF series trading price will behave similar to the NAV per unit. The trading price of the ETF series will fluctuate in accordance with changes in a fund’s NAV, as well as market supply and demand on the exchange or marketplace on which the ETF series are traded. As such, the performance between the ETF series and the traditional mutual fund series of a fund may vary. In addition, there are other factors that could lead to performance variances between the ETF series and the traditional mutual fund series, such as, for example, brokerage commissions and HST.

Liquid alternative mutual funds have the ability to invest in asset classes or use investment strategies that are not permitted for conventional mutual funds. The specific strategies that differentiate these funds from conventional mutual funds may include: increased use of derivatives for hedging and non-hedging purposes, increased ability to sell securities short and the ability to borrow cash to use for investment purposes. If undertaken, these strategies will be used in accordance with the fund’s investment objectives and strategies, and during certain market conditions, may accelerate the pace at which the Fund decreases in value.

While certain funds are managed in accordance with neutral mix guidelines and investment parameters as set out in a fund’s prospectus, the portfolio manager retains the discretion to deviate from it, and it is not included in the offering document as part of the fund’s investment strategies.

Fidelity’s Currency Neutral Funds use derivatives to mitigate these Funds’ exposure to changes in exchange rates between developed market currencies (or U.S. currency) and the Canadian dollar. The investment approach used by the Funds, while effective in reducing exchange rate risk, will not completely eliminate the impact of currency fluctuations. The funds’ returns will differ from the local currency returns of its underlying funds. The performance of an index fund is expected to be lower than the index it seeks to track.

A fund’s volatility is determined using a statistical measure called “standard deviation”. Standard deviation is a statistical measure of how much a return varies over an extended period of time. The more variable the returns, the larger the standard deviation. Investors may examine historical standard deviation in conjunction with historical returns to decide whether an investment's volatility would have been acceptable given the returns it would have produced. A higher standard deviation indicates a wider dispersion of past returns and thus greater historical volatility. Standard deviation does not indicate how an investment actually performed, but it does indicate the volatility of its returns over time. Standard deviation is annualized. The returns used for this calculation are not load-adjusted. Standard deviation does not predict the future volatility of a fund.

The investment risk level indicated is required to be determined in accordance with the Canadian Securities Administrators standardized risk classification methodology, which is based on the historical volatility of a fund, as measured by the ten-year annualized standard deviation of the returns of a fund or those of a reference index, in the case of a new fund.

The breakdown of fund investments that are presented to illustrate the way in which a fund may invest may not be representative of a fund’s current or future investments. A fund’s investments may change at any time.

From time to time a manager, analyst or other Fidelity employee may express views regarding a particular company, security, and industry or market sector. The views expressed by any such person are the views of only that individual as of the time expressed and do not necessarily represent the views of Fidelity or any other person in the Fidelity organization. Any such views are subject to change at any time, based upon markets and other conditions, and Fidelity disclaims any responsibility to update such views. These views may not be relied on as investment advice and, because investment decisions for a Fidelity Fund are based on numerous factors, may not be relied on as an indication of trading intent on behalf of any Fidelity Fund.

Certain statements in this commentary may contain forward-looking statements (“FLS”) that are predictive in nature and may include words such as “expects”, “anticipates”, “intends”, “plans”, “believes”, “estimates” and similar forward-looking expressions or negative versions thereof. FLS are based on current expectations and projections about future general economic, political and relevant market factors, such as interest and assuming no changes to applicable tax or other laws or government regulation. Expectations and projections about future events are inherently subject to, among other things, risks and uncertainties, some of which may be unforeseeable and, accordingly, may prove to be incorrect at a future date. FLS are not guarantees of future performance, and actual events could differ materially from those expressed or implied in any FLS. A number of important factors can contribute to these digressions, including, but not limited to, general economic, political and market factors in North America and internationally, interest and foreign exchange rates, global equity and capital markets, business competition and catastrophic events. You should avoid placing any undue reliance on FLS. Further, this is no specific intention of updating any FLS whether as a result of new information, future events or otherwise.

The Morningstar Risk Adjusted Ratings (MRARs), commonly referred to as the Star Ratings, relate the risk-adjusted performance of a fund to its peers with the same CIFSC Fund category for the period ended as noted and are subject to change monthly. Morningstar calculates ratings for categories with at least five funds. To determine a fund’s rating, the fund and its peer are ranked by their MRARs. If a fund scores in the top 10% of its category, it receives five stars (High); if it falls in the next 22.5%, it receives four stars (Above Average); the next 35% earns a fund three stars (Neutral or Average); those in the next 22.5% receive two stars (Below Average); and the lowest 10% receive one star (Low). The overall rating is a weighted combination of the three-, five- and ten-year ratings. For greater detail, see www.morningstar.ca.

Quartile rankings divide the returns of all funds in a category into four equal regions. Expressed in terms of rank (1, 2, 3 or 4), the quartile measure shows how well a fund has performed compared to all other funds in the same category as defined by Morningstar, and are updated monthly. For multi-series funds (Series A, Series B etc.), each series is rated separately and counted as a fraction of an investment within this scale, which may cause slight variations in the distribution percentages. This accounting prevents a single portfolio in a smaller category from dominating any portion of the rating scale. The top 25% of funds (or quarter) are at the first quartile, the next 25% of funds are at the second, and the next group is at the third quartile. The bottom 25% of funds with the poorest performance are at the fourth quartile.
